The Love Suite: In Mahogany
by Roy Hargrove
Blue Engine Records (2023)
Roy Hargrove’s The Love Suite: In Mahogany is a prime example of the late trumpeter’s remarkable genius and versatility. Commissioned by Jazz at Lincoln Center, the suite was performed live at Alice Tully Hall in 1993, during one of the center’s earliest seasons, and it truly showcases Hargrove’s extraordinary talent and innovative spirit.
At just 23 years old, Hargrove displayed a level of maturity and depth in his composition that was exceptional for his age. The suite blends the fiery energy of hard bop with soulful melodies, reflecting his unique ability to fuse Jazz with elements of hip-hop and R&B. The performance features Hargrove’s quintet, including Ron Blake, Marc Cary, Rodney Whitaker, and Greg Hutchinson, with special guests Jesse Davis and Andre Hayward.
Produced by Willie Jones III, a former member of Hargrove’s sextet, the album celebrates Hargrove’s enduring legacy. His trumpet virtuosity and soulful songwriting shine throughout the suite, with the final movement being particularly breathtaking—a poignant reminder of why Hargrove remains so beloved and missed in the Jazz community. It’s definitely worth a listen.
