Columbia/Legacy Recordings will release Miles in France – Miles Davis Quintet 1963/64: The Bootleg Series, Vol. 8 on November 8th, offering over four hours of previously unreleased music from a pivotal era in Miles Davis’ career. This 6CD/8LP collection, featuring new liner notes by Marcus J. Moore, captures live performances from the 1963 Festival Mondial Du Jazz in Antibes and the 1964 Paris Jazz Festival.
For fans eager for a preview, an unreleased version of “So What,” recorded live at Antibes, is now available. This new installment of the acclaimed “Bootleg Series” shines a light on a crucial period in Davis’ musical evolution—the formation of the Second Great Quintet. The 1963 recordings feature George Coleman on tenor sax, alongside Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams. By 1964, Wayne Shorter had joined the group, solidifying the quintet’s legendary lineup.
A special 2LP set, featuring recordings from Paris in 1964, will also be available, pressed on blue-white-red vinyl in homage to the French flag. With this collection, Davis’ enduring influence and his profound connection to France, a country he considered a second home, come into sharp focus.
