In Melt All the Guns II, Brooklyn-Berlin-based drummer and composer Devin Gray takes his trio project to the next level with 11 intricately crafted pieces that blend rhythmic complexity with rich melodic improvisation. Released on October 4, 2024, via Gray’s own Rataplan Records, the album reunites him with virtuoso trumpeter Ralph Alessi and introduces French pianist Myslaure Augustin. Together, the trio navigates political themes with music that is both reflective and urgent, subtly addressing social issues while carrying an underlying sense of protest and hope.
Building on the group’s 2021 debut EP, Melt All the Guns II dives deeper into the socio-political landscapes hinted at in its titles. From the hard-grooving opener East Berlin 2024 to the reflective ballad No More Walls, Gray’s compositions are marked by a balance of groove and abstraction. Gray explains, “Wordless music is more or less abstract, and the band name and song titles are just small, common-sense gestures, of course. But I think it’s important to show that you have the courage of your convictions.”
Gray’s drumming stands out throughout the record, particularly in the surging rhythms of Political Technology, a track energized by the dynamism he honed during his unaccompanied percussion tours. Alessi’s trumpet work, fluid and imaginative, draws from decades of experience to elevate Gray’s compositions. A long-time collaborator, Alessi brings his signature melodic depth, shining on tracks like Swing States and the contemplative No More Walls. “Ralph helps set the tone, improving the compositions with every line he plays,” says Gray. “He adds real weight to tracks like No More Walls, and in something like East Berlin 2024, he just burns.”
French pianist Myslaure Augustin, making her debut with the trio, shines on the Steinway, bringing a fresh and distinct voice to the group. With a background shaped by classical, Haitian, Jazz, and gospel music, she seamlessly blends these influences into Gray’s compositions. Her intuitive playing is showcased in tracks like Administration Rulez, Political Technology, and More Meritocracy, where her dynamic range spans from delicate touch to fiery, commanding solos. Gray highlights her “positivity and intuitiveness,” noting how she “rocks her solos” and enhances the trio’s chemistry.
Gray’s drumming throughout the album is both textural and deeply expressive, reflecting his continued evolution as a musician and composer. Melt All the Guns II stands as a compelling testament to his growth, not only as a drummer but as a visionary bandleader. With its blend of intricate musicianship and social consciousness, the album offers Jazz that resonates with heart, purpose, and a bold sense of direction.
