Anchors

Label: TAO Forms
Recorded: December 19 & 20, 2022
Released: September 13, 2024
Jason Stein’s “Anchors” is a bold exploration of the bass clarinet’s sonic possibilities. Stein, known for his adventurous approach, is joined by Keefe Jackson on tenor sax and bass clarinet, Joshua Abrams on bass, and Frank Rosaly on drums. The album opens with “Fractured,” a piece that juxtaposes angular melodies with free-flowing improvisation. Stein’s bass clarinet is the star of the show, with its deep, woody sound contrasting nicely with Jackson's more piercing tenor. “Tethered” is a real treat, featuring a gorgeous interplay between Stein and Abrams, their lines intertwining in a complex dance. Rosaly’s drumming is both propulsive and nuanced, driving the ensemble forward while allowing space for individual expression. “Anchors” is a great example of Jason Stein’s innovative spirit and his commitment to pushing the boundaries of Jazz.
